New Led Zeppelin Book by Barney Hoskyns – Including Headley Grange Photograph

A brand new book called Trampled Under Foot by Barney Hoskyns has just been published by Faber and Faber on 6th September.

Barney contacted me as he wanted to use the photograph I took of Headley Grange in 1973 as this was the building that Led Zeppelin’s Stairway To Heaven was conceived.

You can see all the photographs I took of Genesis at Headley Grange in 1974 at www.GenesisPictures.co.uk

Barney Hoskyns, founder of Rock’s Backpages , Trampled Under Foot is an essential music book for 2012.

The book is a unique look at the history, adventures, myths and realities of this most legendary and powerful of bands, it is a labour of love based on hours of first-hand and original interviews. What emerges is a compelling portrait of the four musicians themselves, as well as a fresh insight into the close-knit entourage that protected them, from Peter Grant to Richard Cole to Ahmet Ertegun, giant figures from the long-vanished world of 1970s rock. Featuring many rare and never before seen photographs, it is also the first book on Led Zeppelin to cover such recent events as their triumphant 2007 O2 Arena gig and Robert Plant’s Grammy-winning resurgence of recent years.

Steve Hackett Acoustic Concert and Genesis Pictures Exhibition – Together at Trading Boundaries

The exhibition of the Genesis Pictures I took in the 70s were on show at Trading Boundaries last week culminating in it coinciding with the Steve Hackett concert on the evening of Saturday 30th June.

Trading Boundaries was packed with Steve Hackett (and Genesis) fans who all enjoyed a brilliant evening of music. Steve had his nylon strung classical guitar for the evening, not his more usual famous Les Paul electric guitar.

Steve was accompanied by the hugely talented Rob Townsend on flute and saxophone as well as his brilliant jazz solo on a penny-whistle!

Roger King supplied great keyboards and the trio played a wide selection of music from Steve’s albums as well as some of the gorgeous melodic compositions he co-wrote with Genesis.

After almost two hours of music,Steve stayed afterwards and spent almost an hour talking to people from the audience, many of whom had travelled considerable distances to see the concert.

I met lots of people from the audience before and after the concert who were fascinated with the Genesis pictures that they’d never seen before and shared Genesis stories and my experience of taking the photographs of Steve Hackett and the other members of Genesis while they were rehearsing and recording The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in July 1974      – a mere 38 years ago!

Exclusive Genesis Photographs Exhibition . . . Saturday 23 June – Sunday 1 July 2013 at Trading Boundaries in Sussex

In anticipation of the Steve Hackett gig on Saturday 30th June at Trading Boundaries, Sheffield Green, Near Fletching, East Sussex  TN22 3RB, there is an exhibition of a selection of the rare unpublished photographs I took of the early Genesis line up in 1973-1974. The exhibition will run from Saturday 23rd June to Sunday 1st July and the images will be available to purchase at a specially discounted rate during that period.

Steve Hackett
Steve is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up with Gabriel, Collins, Banks and Rutherford, that produced acclaimed albums such as Selling England by the Pound (a favourite of John Lennon). With Steve’s extraordinary versatility in both his electric guitar playing and his composing, he involves influences from many genres, including Jazz, World Music and Blues. He is equally adept in his classical albums that include renditions of pieces by composers from Bach to Satie, his own acoustic guitar compositions that have gained the admiration of many, including Yehudi Menuhin, and ambitious guitar/ orchestra albums such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic. With Genesis, Steve’s guitar playing produced some of the most memorable moments, from the sensitivity of his acoustic sound on Horizons and Blood on the Rooftops the dramatic rock guitar solos of Firth of Fifth and Fountain of Salmacis. As he embarked on his solo career he developed his exceptional range, pushing musical boundaries into exciting areas, inventing new sounds and also techniques such as ‘tapping’. His solo career went from strength to strength and the mid eighties not only saw the hit single Cell 151, but also the Steve Hackett and Steve Howe super group GTR, highly successful in America.

I was commissioned to take photographs of Genesis in 1974 at Headley Grange in Hampshire where they were writing and rehearsing their album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. These photographs have laid dormant in my collection until recently when I decided to post them onto my website www.GenesisPictures.co.uk so they could be shared.

G2 – Definitive Genesis/Richard Haines Charity Weekend Update – April 2012

A quick update by the organiser on the Charterhouse gigs last weekend – there were so many supporting emails from people who came and from those who couldn’t come – so it seems worth reporting back on how it all went.

“We were 3/4  full on Friday and pretty much sold out on Saturday, resulting in an amazing atmosphere in the hall. The ‘unplugged’ set was superb with a really lively Q&A to follow with some great questions from the audience …

The auction was first class – culminating on Saturday when we sold the Platinum Award from Tony Banks for £740! Nearly £3k from the auction and best part of £1000 in the door collection. Our hope is that we finally give £8000+ to Shooting Star CHASE – we are still waiting for figures to come in and will let you know final figures.
If you’d like to donate, you can here>>

A few photo highlights below – courtesy of Richard Haines and his www.genesispictures.co.uk online biz – do take a look (Quote CHASE to give 20% of any purchase to the charity). Great response to his picture display at the gigs and he kindly donated the ‘flower’ to the auction (went for £280!!). Thanks Richard.”
